Potted UP® is an intimate landscape design firm. Each garden we design, install and maintain is unique. We accomplish this by working closely with our clients to understand their sense of style, how they intend to enjoy their garden and their practical needs.

Since 2007, Potted UP has installed gardens throughout the city of Boston in neighborhoods including: South End, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, South Boston, Seaport, Jamaica Plain and Downtown. Our clients include residential homeowners, condominium associations and local businesses with garden spaces.

Our Team

Each member of our team shares a deep love for design, plants and gardening. Together members bring over thirty years of gardening experience to Potted UP and are committed to industry best practices.

In addition to learning from one another, team members are encouraged to further their horticultural education by participating in landscape professional associations.

Our team is led by Ed MacLean and Tom Kroon.

Ed MacLean

Owner and Lead Designer

A resident of Boston’s South End since 1991, Ed first transformed the empty terrace in his home into an urban oasis some 30 plus years ago and he hasn’t looked back. He launched Potted UP in 2007, after graduating from The Landscape Institute of Harvard University at Arnold Arboretum, with a focus on city garden design. From the front door up to and through the roof door and in every outdoor space in between, Ed seizes opportunities to enhance our living spaces by reconnecting us with nature. Under Ed’s creative direction, Potted UP has designed and installed gardens in and around the City of Boston—courtyards, backyards, walkways, window boxes, balconies, rooftop decks and more. His work has won numerous awards and has been featured in New England Home, The Boston Globe, Home Remodeling Cape Cod, The Islands and South Cost, Bay Windows and This Old House.

Ed is member of Massachusetts Association of Landscape Professionals and is a Certified Landscape Professional (MCLP #1636), a member of the Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association and a member of the Association of Landscape Designers.

A successful businessman, designer, community supporter and leader, Potted UP’s accomplishments are a result of hard work, creativity and a collaborative spirit between homeowner, craftsperson and the talented Potted UP team of designers and fine gardeners.

Ed’s favorite flower is the Delphinium elatum, Delphinium.
